Abstract:
Central pontine and extra-pontine myelinolysis are a well-known complication of hyponatremia. The term
"osmotic demyelination syndrome" is similar to "central pontine myelinolysis", but also includes areas outside the pons.
Osmotic demyelination usually occurs in patients with rapid correction of hyponatremia. It is usually irreversible and can
only be managed by prevention. We report a 57-year old man in whom osmotic demyelination occurred in the
extrapontine area (extrapontine myelinolysis) after rapid correction of hyponatremia.
